Welcome to Big Rock School ... a great place to be for 2011 - 2012 !!

Whether you are joining us for your first year or your fifth, this promises to be a time of wonder and excitement. Big Rock School is fortunate to have a teaching staff that is unrivaled in their expertise, caring, and dedication to excellence. They are commit ted to providing a top-notch educational experience in a safe and caring environment. This promises to be another exhilarating year with amazing learning opportunities for us all. We are glad to be partners with you in the adventure.

Our motto is "This School is For Kids" and we base all of our decisions on what is in their best interest.  We want our students to be the best that they can be and we are committed to academic excellence.  We also believe that we are educating the whole child and so we offer numerous activities that provide for physical, social, and emotional growth. Like a hive of busy little bees, we encourage one another to:

"Bee thoughtful and do the right thing!"

Big Rock School continues to take part in the Alberta Initiative for School Improvement (AISI).  Our project this year focuses on non-fiction writing and intellectual engagement. Research supports the drive to improve reading, vocabulary development, and thinking skills through an emphasis on writing. We eagerly anticipate watching our students grow in each of these areas as they become highly competent writers.

New this year will be Big Rock's implementation of the school division's new report card. It's officially called the Learner Profile and will be a tandem with an on-line program called Students Achieve. This promises to be an incredibly informative resource for parents to view many details about their child's progress with the "click of a button." We are proud of the outstanding relationship we've had with our parent community, and this leading-edge technology will enhance the communication between school and home. The community has always been an important part of Big Rock School's success.  Parents are a vital partner in the learning process and we look forward to your participation in our school; there are numerous opportunities to be involved.

We are fortunate to have an active school council; they've provided many outstanding opportunities for our students through projects like new playground equipment, "bouncy houses" at Sports Day, or volunteers for winter carnival. Together, we can make great things happen for kids.

Yours in Education,

Isabelle Korpela, Prinicpal
